The crazy professor (Original title: The Nutty Professor ) is an American comedy film from 1996 . It is a remake of the film of the same name from 1963 with Jerry Lewis . The director was Tom Shadyac , the script was adapted by David Sheffield , Barry W. Blaustein , Steve Oedekerk and Tom Shadyac. The main roles were played by Eddie Murphy , who played several roles, and Jada Pinkett Smith .

In 2000 , the sequel Family Klumps and the Mad Professor ( Nutty Professor II: The Klumps ) was released.

action

Sherman Klump is a very overweight but popular professor. One day he meets professor Carla Purty and decides to lose weight. At the same time, he was given the task of developing a means to support weight loss. His Dean Richmond wants to see results in order to receive a grant from entrepreneur Harlan Hartley. Klump tests the remedy on himself.

The remedy turns Klump into Buddy Love, a slim but arrogant man. Carla gets to know him in this form without knowing that he is the transformed lump. At first she is fascinated by him.

When Buddy Love ends up in bed with three women, Carla gets angry. Klump publicly reveals to be Buddy Love and returns to his former form. Hartley is thrilled and promises the sponsorship. In the last scene, Carla consoles Sherman that Buddy Love is too skinny for her.

Reviews

The film received rather moderate reviews in Germany. The portrayal of Murphys was described as "vain", the film was certified in the television magazine TV Spielfilm 21/1996 as "toilet joke level". In the US , the reviews were a little less negative.

The lexicon of international films said: “The remake of a Jerry Lewis film [...] leaves the main actor Eddie Murphy too much leeway for a vain self-expression. Only the moments in which he shines as a fat professor and as a family member offer entertainment value, also thanks to quick-witted dialogues. "

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the film the title valuable .

Awards

The film won the film award Oscar in the category Best Make-Up . In the same category he won the BAFTA Award , in the category Best Special Effects he was nominated for the BAFTA Award .

Eddie Murphy was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical . He won the Blockbuster Entertainment Award as well as the Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films and the National Society of Film Critics Award . He was nominated for the MTV Movie Award , the Image Award and the Golden Satellite Award .

David Newman won the BMI Film Music Award .
