Russell Simmons (born October 4, 1957 in New York City ) is an American entrepreneur in the music and fashion industry and co-founder of the hip-hop label Def Jam .

Private life

On December 20, 1998, he married model Kimora Lee Simmons, with whom he has two daughters, born in 2000 and 2002. In March 2006, the two announced their separation. From December 2012 to February 2013, Simmons was in a relationship with Hana Nitsche . Russell Simmons is the older brother of Reverend Joseph Simmons aka "Run" by Run-DMC .

Career

Simmons first studied at City College in New York, but then dropped out to promote local rap artists and produce their albums. These included Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC. In 1984 he formed Def Jam Records with Rick Rubin , which included the Beastie Boys , LL Cool J , Slayer and others under contract.

As a result, Simmons expanded his company under the name Rush Communications . In addition to the label, the group had a management company, a fashion label called Phat Farm , a film production company, a magazine and an advertising agency and produced television programs such as Def Comedy Jam . In 1999 Simmons sold his record company to Universal Music Group for $ 100 million , and in 2004 he sold Phat Farm for $ 140 million.

Simmons produces Def Poetry Jam as a live show on Broadway . He has repeatedly campaigned for the American civil rights movement and against violence against animals in slaughterhouses and is vegan . Simmons supports the David Lynch Foundation , which is committed to teaching transcendental meditation to students. His autobiography is called Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God - Russell Simmons .
