Grammy Award for Album of the Year
The Grammy Award for Album of the Year (dt. Grammy Award for Album of the Year ) is a music price in the annual since 1959 Grammy Awards will be awarded. This award is given to performers, producers and sound engineers alike who have released a high-quality music album in the previous year.
Background and story
The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards) have been presented annually since 1959 for artistic achievement, technical competence and overall musical achievement in various categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), regardless of the number of sales of the work.
The Grammy Award for Album of the Year has been part of the award program since the first Grammy Awards in 1959. He is in addition to the prizes for the best recording, best song and best newcomer one of the four main awards ceremony and is General Field (dt. Public sector ) is assigned. The condition for a nomination is that the album consists of at least 51% new material. From 1962 to 2011, recordings of classical works were excluded from the prize; these were awarded the Grammy Award for Best Classical Album (German Grammy award for the best classical album ). In 2012 this category was integrated into the album of the year, so that nominations from classical music are now possible again.
Up to and including 1965, the award was given exclusively to the artists involved; from 1966 onwards, the producers of the album were also honored. Since 1999, the sound engineers involved in the recording have also received an award, and from 2002 onwards, the mastering engineers responsible for post-production have also received a prize . Between 1966 and 1981 an interpreter could win two awards in this category if he was also a producer. Since then, only one trophy per year and participant is possible, even if the latter took on several functions.
statistics
The Grammy Award for Album of the Year was won three times by three artists, namely Frank Sinatra , Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon , who thus share the record for most awards. The latter won one of these awards as part of the Simon & Garfunkel group . Frank Sinatra and Paul McCartney have both been nominated eight times, making them the performers with the most nominations. Seven performers were nominated three times without receiving an award. This record is shared by Elton John , rappers Eminem and Kanye West , Lady Gaga , Mariah Carey , Radiohead and Sting .
Performers from the United States have been successful 44 times, making it the country with the most awards. Performers from Great Britain won the award ten times, Canada provided the winners in three awards. Thanks to the success of U2 , the award went to Irish interpreters twice. With the Indian Ravi Shankar , the German Klaus Voormann , who both received awards in 1973, and the Brazilian João Gilberto , the prize went to performers from a non-English-speaking country three times.
Among the producers, four people share the record for most awards: Daniel Lanois , David Foster , Phil Ramone and Stevie Wonder have each received three awards. The sound engineers Chris Theis, Commissioner Gordon, Jim Scott, Mike Piersante, Tony Prendatt and Warren Riker have each received two awards for their work in this category, making them the most successful sound engineers. Bernie Grundman and Gavin Lurssen have both received two awards for mastering and are therefore the record holders in this area.
