Rumors (English for rumors ) is the eleventh studio album by the rock band Fleetwood Mac from 1977. With 40 million copies sold, it is one of the world's most successful records. In December 1976, before the album was released, the single Go Your Own Way was released.
history
In the two years since the last album was released, conditions within the band had become difficult. Mick Fleetwood separated from his wife Jenny. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks , who were in a relationship when they joined the group, also split up, as did John and Christine McVie , although all five remained in the band. This meant, as Stevie Nicks later pointed out, that people who normally didn't play a role in each other's lives went through long hours and difficult times together. Christine McVie later noted that they each wrote about each other, hence the title of the album.
Nicks considered the Buckingham-written Go Your Own Way to be a somber allusion to the foreseeable breakup of this line-up, and she and Buckingham discussed it. Dreams was her attempt to be more optimistic. You Make Loving Fun was referring to an affair between Christine McVie and the group's chief lighting technician. Gold Dust Woman was a reference to cocaine . Don't Stop was written by Christine McVie after their divorce and gave an optimistic outlook on their newly separated lives. Songbird has been described by Christine McVie as "a little anthem" that "is meant for all of us". The chain was special. The last part, say the last one and a quarter minutes, was written first with no title. Stevie Nicks had written this part alone and gave it to the others, as she said. Lindsey Buckingham then had an idea to start and the first part was recorded.
On the cover of the album, which is embossed with a finely designed pattern, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood are shown in black and white as a dancing couple. A dexterity toy of the time is ambiguously attached to Fleetwood's waistband . On the back and on an enclosed sheet there are some photographs of the band on which the lyrics are also printed.
In 1978 Rumors won a Grammy for 1977 Album of the Year and stayed at the top of the Billboard Music Chart for 31 weeks. By 2003, the album had sold more than 19 million copies in the US alone and was named the “third best- selling single- disc album of all time” by the RIAA.
In the 1990s, Songbird was covered by Eva Cassidy , an American singer who is quite popular in the UK . Their version became very popular there. In 2006, readers of Q Rumors magazine voted it 68th among the “greatest albums of all time”; In 2001 it was ranked 16th on TV channel VH1 . In 2003 the album was number 25 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time .
DVD-Audio (2003)
The DVD-Audio version also contains Silver Springs (as track 6) after Go Your Own Way , while Songbird was placed at the end (track 12). All other titles kept their original numbering.
In addition to 96 kHz / 24-bit surround sound and stereo recordings, this version offers a photo gallery, exclusively for DVD-Audio players; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, exclusive to standard DVD players, and The Making of 'Rumors' , a 37-minute collection of audio interviews that provides details on the creation and recording of each song.
New edition (2004)
On March 23, 2004, Warner Bros. released a remastered album with a bonus CD with outtakes, early demos and jam sessions .
3-CD Expanded and Deluxe versions (2013)
On January 25, 2013, Warner Bros. released a 3-CD box set for the 35th anniversary, consisting of a remastered album and previously unreleased live recordings from the 1977 world tour and a series of session outtakes from the rumors recordings. At the same time a deluxe version with 4 CDs, a DVD and a vinyl LP was released.

Others
- After the album was released, The Chain became the regular opening song of all Fleetwood Mac concerts. After Buckingham had left the band before the "Tango in the Night" tour in 1988, Stevie Nicks appealed during the tour in this song again and again "Lindsey, please don't break the chain!" ("Lindsey, please don't break the chain." ! ")
