Jazz Samba is a bossa nova album by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd , recorded on February 13, 1962, and released on Verve on April 20, 1962 . Jazz Samba was the first bossa nova album on the US jazz scene and is considered one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.

History of origin

Stan Getz in Sandvika, Norway, February 1983

Although Stan Getz was the star of the album, the album was heavily influenced and shaped by guitarist Charlie Byrd. Byrd, like his drummer Buddy Deppenschmidt, had heard a lot of bossa nova on a tour through South America funded by the State Department and had brought back tapes that he enthusiastically played for his fellow musicians. Getz was particularly enthusiastic about the album Chega de Saudade by João Gilberto , which contained Bossas by Antônio Carlos Jobim . Getz and Byrd decided to record an album in this new style. For this they chose compositions by Jobim ( Desafinado and One Note Samba (Samba de Uma Nota Só)) and other creators of bossa nova such as Baden-Powell or Ary Barroso . There was also a composition by Byrd. After the first attempts in Rudy Van Gelder's studio, the album was recorded in February 1962: Getz and Byrd were accompanied by Byrd's regular rhythm section (Keter Betts on bass, Buddy Deppenschmidt on drums), which was also accompanied by Charlie's brother Byrd, Joe "Gene" Byrd, and Bill Reichenbach were reinforced. The album was recorded within four hours at All Souls Church in Washington, DC. Getz and producer Taylor immediately flew back to New York. Taylor hesitated whether to release the album despite the rhythm section's weaknesses; it was launched shortly afterwards as the Verve LP V6-8432. Byrd initially only received a routine fee for participating in the album. In 1964, he litigated for three years to earn $ 50,000 in revenue.

Impact history

The release of the album marks the beginning of the bossa nova fever in the United States, which culminated in the mid-1960s with Getz's next album, Getz / Gilberto . The album reached number 1 in the pop album charts, where it stayed for 70 weeks. Getz won the Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance - Soloist or Small Group for Desafinado .

The album received five stars from Allmusic and is considered an important part of every jazz collection. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010 .
