William Frank "Bill" Reichenbach Sr. (born December 18, 1923 in Washington, DC , † May 16, 2008 in Hollywood , California ) was an American jazz drummer and percussionist who helped develop the jazz samba style.

Life

Reichenbach began his musical career before he graduated from McKinley Tech High School . During the Second World War he played in a band of the Kriegsmarine before touring with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey , Jimmy Dorsey and Art Mooney . Then he worked in his hometown jazz clubs , where he accompanied Frank Sinatra , Patti Page , Teddy Wilson and Zoot Sims .

Charlie Byrd hired Reichenbach as an additional drummer for the 1962 album Jazz Samba recorded with Stan Getz , which caused a wave of enthusiasm for bossa nova in the United States. In the course of 1962 he switched to the Byrd Trio for Buddy Deppenschmidt , of which he was a member for twelve years. Then he worked again in Washington, as the house drummer on Blues Alley .

He is the father of trombonist Bill Reichenbach Jr. and singer Kurt Reichenbach. After the death of his wife, he moved to California .
