Buddy Deppenschmidt
Buddy Deppenschmidt (born February 16, 1936 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz drummer and percussionist who helped develop the jazz samba style.
life and work
Deppenschmidt studied drums with Joe Morello, among others . Since 1960 he was a member of Charlie Byrd's trio , with whom he toured Brazil in 1961; in the process he got to know the bossa nova and its rhythms and subsequently also dealt with Brazilian percussion instruments such as the berimbao . He became known through his work with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. The joint recording of the album Jazz Samba in 1962 marked the beginning of a wave of enthusiasm in North America for Latin American music.
Deppenschmidt has been a teacher at the Newton School of Music in Bucks County since the 1970s . He leads a band called Jazz Renaissance , with which he has toured internationally. He has appeared on three film soundtracks and over 40 albums.
