Getz / Gilberto is a jazz albumpublished in 1964by Stan Getz and João Gilberto with Antônio Carlos Jobim on piano.

The album

Stan Getz, who already interpreted Bossa Nova pieces on the album Jazz Samba in 1962, plays on the record with two founders of this style, the singer and guitarist João Gilberto and the pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim, who wrote most of the compositions. It became one of the best-selling albums of all time. The singer Astrud Gilberto, who sang on The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado , achieved world fame. Interestingly, for reasons unknown , producer Creed Taylor left the recording over a year before releasing the album.

The album's success marks a high point in the US bossa nova wave; Getz / Gilberto made the style very popular in Europe and the rest of the world. In 1965 the LP won both the Grammy Award for “ Best Album of the Year ”, the “ Best Jazz Instrumental Album ” and the Grammy for “Best Technical Recording” (sound engineer: Phil Ramone ). The single version of "The Girl from Ipanema" won the Grammy for " Single of the Year ".

The music magazine Jazzwise added the album to The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World list ; Keith Shadwick wrote:

“This is perhaps the coolest, most definitely etched marriage of melody and latin rhythm ever achieved, and it was achieved by the towering genius of Tom Jobim's tunes and spare piano accompaniment, Gilberto's uniquely intimate voice and guitar, a rhythm section that breathes life and color, all of it topped by the supreme melodist, Stan Getz. All that plus Joao's wife Astrud as a last minute show stealer and you have a classic on your hands. ”

“This is perhaps the coolest, definitely most memorable combination of melody and Latin rhythms ever, and it was achieved through the overwhelming genius of Tom Jobim's melodies and economical piano accompaniment, Gilberto's uniquely intimate singing and guitar playing, a rhythm section that brings life and color breathes, all crowned by the chief melodist, Stan Getz. That and Joao's wife Astrud as a last-minute show thief, and you have a classic in your hands. "
