Dorival Tostes "Dori" Caymmi (born August 26, 1943 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, songwriter of the Música Popular Brasileira , who was also active as an arranger and music producer and was nominated for several Grammies .

Career

Caymmi comes from a musical family; his parents are the composer Dorival Caymmi and the singer Stella Maris ; His siblings Nana and Danilo Caymmi are also active as musicians. From the age of eight he took piano lessons from Lúcia Branco and Nise Poggi Obino. At the Conservatório Lorenzo Fernandez he was taught the basics of music theory; He learned harmony from Paulo Silva and Moacir Santos .

In 1959 he began working as a professional musician when he accompanied his sister Nana. In 1960 he became a member of the Grupo dos Sete and wrote music for television games. In 1964 he was the musical director and guitarist in the play Opinião , which proved to be momentous for the further development of the Música Popular Brasileira. Between 1964 and 1966 he produced the recordings of Edu Lobo , Eumir Deodato and Nara Leão for Philips . He also performed with Francis Hime, Wanda Sá and Vinícius de Moraes . In 1966 he was the director of incidental music for the play Arena Conta Zumbi . Together with Nelson Motta he wrote numerous songs that were awarded, such as "Saveiros" (1966 (interpreted by Nana Caymmi), "Cantiga" (1967; interpreted by MPB-4) or "O Cantador", which was performed by Flora Purim , Sarah Vaughan and Natalie Cole became internationally known and worked as guitarist and arranger for Paul Winter's sextet, and toured North America with him.

At the end of the 1960s he was responsible as producer and arranger for the albums by Caetano Veloso , Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil . In 1972 he made his debut album. As a film composer, he wrote the soundtracks for several films before moving to Los Angeles in 1989 . There he presented other albums under his own name. His album Cinema: A Romantic Vision , on which he dealt with famous movie songs, was nominated for a Grammy. In 1994 he toured Europe with Toots Thielemans . In 1995, he recalled in Carnegie Hall with Gilberto Gil, Branford Marsalis , Herbie Mann , Paula Robinson , Eliane Elias , Joyce and Ottmar Liebert at Tom Jobim . He also worked with Dionne Warwick , Djavan , Marilyn Scott , Oscar Castro-Neves , Eliane Elias, Mario Adnet and James Taylor and in turn produced albums by Edu Lobo.

Prizes and awards

Caymmi and Motta won first prize for the song "Saveiros" at the first Festival Nacional de Canção . He received a Latin Grammy for the song "Saudade de amar" and another for the album Para Caymmi 90 Anos .
