Life

Joyce, who is influenced by Ella Fitzgerald , Miles Davis and Billie Holiday , started her career in a vocal group that appeared on the 1964 album Conjunto Sambacana . In 1968 her first solo album, Joyce , was released by Philips. In 1970 she continued her career with the A Tribo group , which then included Nelson Ângelo, Toninho Horta , Novelli and Naná Vasconcelos . In 1972 she got a record deal with EMI. After a baby break, she toured internationally with Vinícius de Moraes in 1975 and also presented herself as a guitarist. In New York in 1977 she recorded an album produced by Claus Ogerman with musicians like Michael Brecker (which was never released). In 1980 she had a hit in Brazil with her song Clareana (a lullaby for her daughters). As a result, her songs were interpreted by stars such as Milton Nascimento , Elis Regina and Maria Bethânia . After her albums received a lot of attention in the 1980s, she was invited to Japan in 1985. In the years that followed, her music was also widely used by the drum'n'bossa scene, for example in Great Britain.

Joyce is the presenter of the television show Cantos do Rio. In 1997 she published her book Fotografei Você na Minha Rolleyflex (MultiMais Editorial), which dealt with her experiences in the Brazilian music scene and contained personal portraits of fellow musicians such as João Gilberto . In 2004 she had an international hit with Just a Little Bit Crazy (accompanied by Bugge Wesseltoft and Banda Maluca ). She also worked with Yōko Kanno on the soundtrack of the first episode of the anime Wolf’s Rain .
