In the 19th century, the community usually had between 1,250 and 1,500 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a gradual decline in the number of inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century to the lows in the 1940s. Due to the relative proximity to the city of Bordeaux and the significantly lower property prices in the country, there has been a slight increase in the population over the past few decades.

economy

For centuries, Guîtres lived from agriculture, which also includes viticulture, which today occupies the largest acreage in the municipality and is marketed through the Bordeaux (AOC) and Bordeaux Supérieur (AOC) appellations. But tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also contributes to the municipality's income.

history

The history of the place in closely linked to the established in the 11th century on the banks of the Isle Benedictine - Notre-Dame de Guîtres whose church the destruction of the Revolution has survived and is used as a parish church. In the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) and especially in the years between 1360 and 1410, the area suffered severe devastation, so that entire villages and areas were depopulated, which were later joined by immigrants from the regions of the Angoumois , the Saintonge and des Aunis were repopulated; then the area was named Pays Gabay . In 1587 Guîtres was besieged by the Huguenots .

Former Notre-Dame Abbey

The church, which is still Romanesque in parts , but largely in Gothic styles, has been recognized as a monument historique since 1901 .

Henry IV's fountain

Others

  • The so-called 'Henry IV's Fountain' from the Renaissance (around 1600) was originally on the territory of the Domaine de Belle-Isle ; it was acquired by the community in 1983, placed on a small square in the center and then cleaned and repaired. The well shaft, which is no longer in existence today, is secured against accidents by four pieces of wall on which the bucket can be placed; on these walls are four corner pillars supporting a dome with a vase. The front side is particularly emphasized by a small gable field . The fountain, which also appears in the city's coat of arms, has been recognized as a monument historique since 1956 .
  • The war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War, elaborately designed with bronze figures and draperies (photo → weblink), stands on a hill behind the church. A female figure ( Marianne ) brings a laurel wreath (symbol of victory) and two palm fronds ( symbols of martyrs ); her slightly stooped posture suggests that she is about to lay these items in front of the Gallic rooster crowning the monument .
