Saint-Pierre church

Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps is a French municipality with 723 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The current place name was created as a result of the amalgamation of two originally independent communities during the French Revolution .

location

The two districts of Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps are located near the source of the Palais river and are about 20 kilometers (driving distance) north-east from Libourne and a good 15 kilometers north-east from Saint-Emilion .

history

Almost nothing has been published on the history of the two districts that were merged in the 19th century; we only know of destruction in 1587 during the Huguenot wars .

Attractions

  • The church of St-Pierre in the district of Petit-Palais is located in the middle of the local cemetery and has a surprisingly mature facade in the Poitevin style ( cf.Notre-Dame-la-Grande de Poitiers , St-Hilaire de Melle , even including the gable) St-Pierre d'Aulnay , Prieuré St-Nicolas de Civray ). It probably comes from the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century and was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1846 . accepted. It is unclear whether it is a former priory church or collegiate church ; In any case, in a list from 1398 it is listed as a 'parish church'. All parts of the façade are extremely sculptural and decorative - but figurative decorations are largely avoided. Like many church portals in southwest France (e.g. Aubeterre-sur-Dronne or Chalais ), the inner arch of the archivolt portal is jagged. Although the facade with its triumphal arch scheme in the portal zone and its vertically rising service bundles suggests that the church has three naves, the interior of the church has only one nave and gives a rather defensive and poorly structured impression. It is rather unlikely that the rib vaults inside correspond to the original condition - in any case, work was carried out on the vaults in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
  • The Notre Dame church in the Cornemps district about two kilometers away has seen better days, as the remains of the - now free-standing - facade of the former church make clear. It is probably even a former abbey church that was converted into a parish church early (perhaps as early as the 14th century). This was destroyed during the French Wars of Religion and then lay in ruins for several years before it was reduced in size in the 17th century and given a completely unadorned new facade. The almost windowless building with its high outer walls gives the appearance of a fortified church . Inside, the single-nave building is completely unadorned; the choir area is a few steps higher than the nave. The church ruin has been recognized as a monument historique since 1925 .

economy

Viticulture has been practiced in the community for centuries. The wines are marketed through the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations.
