In the 19th century the community consistently had between 800 and 900 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century to the lows in the 1960s. Due to the relative proximity to the city of Bordeaux and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside, there has been a noticeable increase in the population over the past few decades.

economy

Villegouge lived for centuries from agriculture, which also includes viticulture, which today occupies the largest acreage in the municipality and is marketed through the Bordeaux (AOC) and Bordeaux Supérieur (AOC) appellations. But tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also contributes to the municipality's income.

history

The medieval place name was Villagosia ('City of the Goths'), which indicates a possible Visigothic origin of the place. Later documents suggest that the place was very badly affected during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).

Attractions

  • Of the originally late Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre , only the archivolt portal , which has been stepped down several times and is slightly sharpened at the apex, has been preserved, whose capitals are particularly noteworthy. In the 15th century the church building was fundamentally renewed, vaulted and stabilized by buttresses on the south side. In the 19th century, a transept with side apses and a tower on the north side were added. The portal has been recognized as a Monument Historique since 1908 .
  • The Château de Pommiers ( 44 ° 59 ′ 16 ″  N , 0 ° 19 ′ 18 ″  W ), which originates mainly from the 18th century, but generally looks rather simple, is located partly on the territory of the municipality of Villegouge and partly on that of the neighboring municipality Vérac . Today it serves as a stud and riding stables.
