Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens ( Occitan : Sent Sulpici de Faleirens ) is a southwestern French municipality with 1348 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gironde in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens is about ten meters above sea level. d. M. about one kilometer east of the Dordogne and about seven kilometers (driving distance) southeast of Libourne and five kilometers southwest of Saint-Émilion . The city of Bordeaux is located about 38 kilometers to the west.

In the 19th century the community always had between 1,100 and 1,300 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture resulted in job losses and the population dropping to just over 1,000 in the 1920s to 1940s in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the proximity to the city of Bordeaux and the significantly lower real estate prices in the country, there has been a numerical increase in the population again in recent decades.

economy

Viticulture has been practiced in the community for centuries. The wines are mostly marketed through the Bordeaux (AOC) and Bordeaux Supérieur (AOC) appellations.

history

Almost nothing has been published on the history of the place; we only know of two visits by Henry of Navarre in 1582 and 1583 to the Château Lescours .

Attractions

Menhir de Peyrefitte
  • In the area of the municipality stands the approximately 5.5 meter high Menhir de Peyrefitte , a testimony to the megalithic cultures that were formerly also active in southwest France . The huge limestone shows only a few signs of processing and has been washed out by the rain. It was recognized as a Monument historique as early as 1889 .
  • The parish church of Saint-Sulpice is a Romanesque building from the 12th century with side aisles from a later period - the original apse is still preserved . In the early 19th century, a neo-Romanesque bell tower was added to the south side of the church , whose pointed helmet ( flèche ) towers over the town, visible from afar. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 2008 .
  • The Château Lescours dates in part from the 15th century and is - as a winery - privately owned. It is allowed to market some of its wines under the appellation Saint-Émilion .
