Sainte-Terre ( Occitan : Senta Terra ) is a southwestern French town with 1,883 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Sainte-Terre is about ten meters above sea level. d. M. and about 300 meters north of the Dordogne . The distance to Libourne is about 15 kilometers (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; it is about ten kilometers to Saint-Emilion . Sainte-Terre was on a branch line of the Camino de Santiago .

history

The legendary tradition begins in the time of the Crusades . A returnees from Palestine allegedly brought a little bit of earth with him, which he scattered at the highest point of the place - a small chapel was first built above it, which was later expanded into a church.

Sainte-Terre - Église Saint-Alexis
  • The parish church of Saint-Alexis is a single-nave building from the 12th century with later additions - the side aisles, for example, only date from the 19th century and the west facade with its portal are creations of the 15th century. The portal shows a late Gothic blend - keel arch and a basket arch as the upper end of the entrance. In the area above there is a round window to illuminate the nave . Above this, a two-part bell gable - also raised by a keel arch - completes the facade. The nave consists of two bays; the yoke immediately in front of the choir comes from the original chapel and is vaulted with a dome . The church was recognized as a monument historique in 1925 .
Château de Lavagnac
  • The Château de Lavagnac , a building from the 18th century, is located on the outskirts. Two bulky-looking corner towers with a square floor plan frame the central residential wing ( corps de logis ). This is two-story and has a raised and hipped mansard roof with five portico windows , of which the middle one is raised; behind it were originally the rooms for the service personnel, which were later also used as storage rooms.

economy

Viticulture has been practiced in the municipality for centuries. The wines produced are now marketed through the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur (AOC) appellations. In the shallow bank areas on the lower reaches of the Dordogne, criss-crossed by small canals, you can still see several fishermen. a. specialize in catching lampreys ; a lamprey can also be seen in the city arms. The rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) and cultural and wine tourism also play an important role in the income of the municipality.
