history

Finds show that the area was settled in prehistoric times.

In the 16th century the city was a center of French Protestantism . A battle took place here in 1587 between Protestants under the later Henry IV and a Catholic army under Anne de Joyeuse , who was killed in these battles.

During the French Revolution , Coutras became the capital of the former canton of the same name . Since the cantonal reform in 2015, the municipality has been the capital of the newly created canton of North Libournais , to which 26 municipalities belong in addition to the previous 12 municipalities of the former canton.
