The Isle is a river in southwest France that runs in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It rises in the Monts du Limousin , in the municipal area of Janailhac , generally drains in a south-westerly direction and flows into the Dordogne after 255 kilometers in Libourne as a right tributary . On its way, the Isle crosses the Haute-Vienne , Dordogne and Gironde departments . The mean gradient is 1.56 m / km.

Until the mid-19th century, the Isle served as a trade route for grain and wine. At that time it was canalised over a length of 144 kilometers and could be navigated by ships from the mouth to Périgueux. However, the structures and facilities have been out of service for many years, so that today only 31 kilometers of the tidal part of the river, from Libourne to the Laubardemont lock , just below Coutras, are navigable.
