Montpon-Ménestérol ( Occitan : Mont Paun e Menestairòu ) is a French municipality with 5498 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Périgueux and the canton of Montpon-Ménestérol , of which it is the capital. The inhabitants are called Astériens .

Montpon-Ménestérol lies on the Isle of River . The neighboring municipalities of Montpon-Ménestérol are Saint-Barthélemy-de-Bellegarde in the north, Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes in the northeast, Saint-Martial-d'Artenset in the east, Saint-Rémy in the south, and Saint-Martin-de-Gurson in the southwest, Ménesplet and Le Pizou in the west and Eygurande-et-Gardedeuil in the northwest.
The A89 autoroute runs through the municipality from Bordeaux to Brive-la-Gaillarde .
history
Originally the localities of Montpon, Ménestérol and Montignac-sur-Vauclaire were independent municipalities. In 1824 Montignac and Ménestérol merged. In 1964, the communes of Montpon-sur-l'Isle and Ménestérol-Montignac became the commune of Montpon-Ménestérol.
