Cherval - Château du Clauzuroux

Cherval ( Occitan Charvard ) is a place and a French community with 274 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The community consists of the main town as well as some hamlets (hameaux) and individual farms (fermes) .

Location and climate

The place Cherval lies in the cultural landscape of the Périgord at an altitude of about 115  m . The river Pude flows through the north of the municipality . The city of Périgueux is about 42 km (driving distance) southeast; the small town of Ribérac is a good 19 km south. The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 885 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

economy

Residents of the community lived for centuries as self by the Agriculture and Forestry (cereals, charcoal); Fruit and vegetables were grown in the hotel's own gardens or offered at the market. Small traders and craftsmen have settled in the village.

Small Neolithic finds were made in the municipality . In the 11th / 12th In the 17th century the Romanesque domed church was built (originally probably a priory church ), which was fortified by the Knights Templar in the late 13th century .

Attractions

  • The Église Saint-Martin is - next to the Abbey Church of St-Nicolas (Trémolat) - one of the few domed churches in the Périgord. It is believed that the church was completed as early as the 11th century; however, the domes were not added until the 12th century and the fortified church (tower with fortified chamber and battlement) did not take place until the 13th century. The chapel on the north side with its round stair tower was added in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. The church building has been classified as a monument historique since 1913
Surroundings
  • In the extreme northwest of the municipality ( 45 ° 24 ′ 35 ″  N , 0 ° 21 ′ 21 ″  E ) lies the Château de Clauzuroux from the 17th / 18th century on the banks of the Pude . Century. The two-storey building consists of a central residential wing ( corps de logis ) and two higher side wings with hipped mansard roofs and portico windows . The building is privately owned and - together with a pigeon house (pigeonnier) and several barns - has been classified as a monument historique since 1947
  • The Château du Bourbet is a two-storey building from the end of the 18th century, but with older parts; it is located in the middle of fields and forests and forms the center of a farm with an attached B&B hotel.
  • The Château de la Feuillade is tucked away in a wood. It dates from the 14th century but was rebuilt in the 17th century. It is privately owned.
