The continuous decline in population since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture ; In addition, there is the ongoing closure of small farms.
economy
The community is still largely dominated by agriculture and forestry; Viticulture, which was quite important in earlier times, hardly plays a role anymore. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
There are almost no publications on the history of the place. The local parish church dates from the 12th century.
Attractions
- The local castle is not far from the town center (bourg) . The two-storey building, designed in historicizing style, consists only of a residential wing ( logis ) with round corner turrets and a hipped mansard roof with neo-baroque portico windows .
- The single-nave Romanesque Église Saint-Vincent dates from the 12th century. The portal zone of the church, made of precisely hewn stones, is designed according to the Charentesian model following a triumphal arch scheme, with the two outer arches being closed; the gable above was possibly raised in the 14th or 15th century. The apse and crossing tower are also made of stone . The interior of the church is kept simple; only above the crossing is an unexposed dome , the plaster of which - like that of the apse dome - is provided with joint paintings . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
