The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.
economy
The community is traditionally oriented towards agriculture and forestry; the residents lived on a self-sufficient basis for centuries . Today fish farming and the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also play important roles in economic life.
history
Nothing is known about the medieval history of the place. The church, built in the 13th century, was dependent on the collegiate church of Aubeterre, only 9 km to the west .
Attractions
The outwardly unadorned late Romanesque church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary ; it has an apsidal choir closure - perhaps after a fire or after destruction in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) - and a crossing tower that was also added later ; the portal on the south side protrudes slightly from the wall. The nave was originally vaulted; after the collapse it was covered with a wooden flat ceiling. The yoke in front of the choir is vaulted with a transverse oval dome . In the apse and in the crossing dome there are remains of frescoes from the 16th century. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1947 .
