Les Lèches - Chapelle de Tresséroux

Les Lèches ( Occitan Las Leschas ) is a southwestern French city and a municipality (commune) with 368 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the far west of the departments of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The community consists of the main town and several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farmsteads (fermes) .

Location and climate

The place Les Lèches is located on the upper reaches of the Beauronne river in the old cultural landscape of the Périgord almost 43 km (driving distance) southwest of Périgueux or a good 33 km south of Ribérac at an altitude of about 95  m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 880 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture ; In addition, there is the ongoing closure of small farms.

economy

The community is still largely dominated by agriculture and forestry; Viticulture, which was quite important in earlier times, hardly plays a role anymore. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

There are almost no publications on the history of the place. The Chapelle de Tresséroux , built in the 12th century, belonged to a priory whose farm buildings were demolished during the revolutionary years .

Attractions

  • The local parish church (Église Saint-Laurent) with its pointed helmet is a work of the 19th century.
  • On the outskirts there is a covered washing area ( lavoir ) from the 19th century.
Surroundings
  • The small Romanesque Chapelle de Tresséroux stands approx. 1 km southeast of the village and belonged to the property of the Notre-Dame abbey of Ligueux, approx. 60 km away . The otherwise unadorned facade has a staggered portal with an overhanging arch in the form of a diamond rod . The placement of the bell gable (clocher mur) above the triumphal arch is rather unusual . There are small openings in the wall above the apse , which served as entry holes for a dovecote behind . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1982 .
