The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

economy

The community is traditionally oriented towards agriculture and forestry; the residents lived on a self-sufficient basis for centuries . Today the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) plays an important role in the income of the municipality.

history

Little is known about the medieval and early modern history of the formerly independent towns of Bouteilles and Saint-Sébastien ; they merged into one church in 1825.

Attractions

  • Of the originally Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens , only the apse and the crossing tower remain ; the nave was renewed in the 19th century. Possibly in the context of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the apse was structurally increased so that it forms a unit with the crossing tower - this created a windowless, but easy to defend space, which is divided on the outside by blind arcades . The nave has a flat roof; the apse, which is significantly lower in the interior, shows the usual dome vaulting . The Romanesque components of the church have been recognized as Monument historique since 1948 .
