In the 19th century the place had over 1,000 inhabitants at times, but as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has since fallen to the lows in the 1970s and 1980s.
economy
The majority of the town's residents make their living from agriculture, small businesses and tourism, as many abandoned houses have been converted into holiday homes ( gîtes ) in recent years .
history
The history of the place is closely linked to the abbey mentioned in the 8th century, which was sacked by the Normans in 849 and 860 . According to tradition, another predecessor of today's abbey church was consecrated in 991 by Bishop Frotarius of Périgueux . In 1304, Bertrand de Got, the Archbishop of Bordeaux and later Pope Clement V , paid a visit to the abbey.
