Campsegret - the townscape

Campsegret ( Occitan Camp Sègret ) is a commune with 389 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) of the northwestern department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Périgueux and the canton of Périgord Central . It consists of the main town and some hamlets (hameaux) and individual farmsteads (fermes) .

Location and climate

The place Campsegret is located in the cultural landscape of the Périgord almost 35 km (driving distance) southwest of Périgueux at an altitude of about 80  m . The city of Bergerac is only about 14 km southwest. The climate is moderate, rain (approx. 860 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

economy

The community is traditionally oriented towards agriculture and forestry; the residents lived on a self-sufficient basis for centuries . Today fish farming and the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also play important roles in economic life.

Attractions

  • The parish church of Saint-Étienne , built in the neo-Gothic style, is dedicated to the arch martyr Stephen . The building from the second half of the 19th century is dominated by a bell tower with a pointed stone helmet . The interior has a single nave.
  • A building near the church still has a late medieval round tower .
  • A chapel (oratoire) dedicated to Our Lady was built in 1956.
  • There is an intermittent spring north of the village, but the water is not drinkable.
