Mairie Vallereuil

Vallereuil ( Occitan Valaruelh ) is a southwestern French city and a municipality (commune) with 288 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the center of the department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The place Vallereuil is located in the old cultural landscape of the Périgord about 30 km (driving distance) southwest of Périgueux or a good 27 km southeast of Ribérac at an altitude of about 110  m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 890 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture ; Added to this is the ongoing abandonment of small farms.

economy

The community is still largely dominated by agriculture and forestry; viticulture, which was quite important in earlier times, hardly plays a role. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

Nothing is known about the medieval and early modern history of the place; only the Latinized name Vallis et Rivoli ("valleys and brooks") has been handed down. The local parish church dates from the 12th century and the bell from the 15th century.

Attractions

  • The squat-looking late Romanesque - early Gothic Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption stands on a slope on the outskirts. The two-part bell gable (clocher mur) above the round arched portal covered with a diamond rod is a later ingredient. The interior of the church was restored at the beginning of the 21st century.
  • A wrought-iron cross stands on a pedestal next to the church.
  • There is a water wheel in the village.
