Chassaignes ( Occitan Chassanhas ) is a commune with 68 people (at January 1, 2017) of the West department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Aquitaine ). The community consists of the main town as well as some hamlets (hameaux) and individual farms (fermes) .
Location and climate
The place Chassaignes is located in the cultural landscape of the Périgord approx. 9 km (driving distance) west of Ribérac at an altitude of approx. 120 m . The climate is moderate, rain (approx. 885 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.
economy
The community is traditionally oriented towards agriculture and forestry; the residents lived on a self-sufficient basis for centuries . Today fish farming and the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also play important roles in economic life.
history
There are no publications on the medieval and modern history of the place. The local church could have been a priory church due to its size and good stone workmanship .
Attractions
- The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was consecrated in 1100 by Bishop Renaud de Thiviers. In times of crisis, the bell tower of the unadorned building served as a fortified chamber.
- A covered washing area ( lavoir ) is located on the outskirts.

- The Château de Pauly dates from the 18th century. Today it serves as a B&B and for family celebrations, etc.
