Saint-Amand-de-Vergt is a French municipality with 243 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Périgueux and the canton of Périgord Central (until 2015: canton of Vergt ).
The name in the Occitan language is Sench Amand de Vern and is derived from Saint Amandus of Bordeaux . The addition "de-Vergt" was added in 1730 to distinguish the municipality from other municipalities of the same name.
The inhabitants are called Saint-Amandinois and Saint-Amandinoises or Saint-Amandois and Saint-Amandoises .

Saint-Amand-de-Vergt is located about 25 km south of Périgueux and about 25 km northeast of Bergerac on the borders of the Périgord Central , Bergeracois and Landais areas of the historic Périgord province .

Saint-Amand-de-Vergt is located in the catchment area of the Dordogne river .
The Caudeau , one of its tributaries, partially forms a natural border with the neighboring municipality of Val de Louyre et Caudeau to the south. The Retz, a tributary of the Caudeau, flows in sections along the border with the western neighboring municipality of Fouleix.
history
The history of the municipality goes back to the 10th and 12th centuries. According to local tradition, it was monks of the Order of St. Amandus who gave the place its name.
The history of Saint-Amand-de-Vergt is marked by successive wars. The Hundred Years War between 1337 and 1453 was a dispute between the English and French crowns. During this time, the Périgord was largely affected by bloody fighting and looting. A century later, the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) demanded a blood toll. The levying of new taxes despite a general emergency led to the croquant rebellion from the late 16th century to the middle of the 17th century .

Population development
After the records began, the population rose to a peak of around 810 in the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 175 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s, before a phase of moderate growth set in. that continues today.

Saint-Amand-de-Vergt has had a municipal partnership with Saint-Jacques-de-Montcalm in the Canadian province of Québec since 1996 through the former canton of Vergt .
Attractions
Parish Church of Saint-Amand
It was built at the end of the 11th century. Its Romanesque style is particularly evident in the bell tower that crowns a dome , which is illuminated every year in July and August by a music festival.

sport and freetime
- In addition to the campsite, Lac de Neuf-Font offers two beaches for bathing in the lake. A 75 m long water slide and pedal boats round off the leisure activities. A special area is reserved for anglers.
- The Circuit à vélo "Au Pays des Croquants" cycle path is 39 km long with a difference in altitude of 154 m. It leads from Vergt through the area of the former canton.

The Route départementale 42 crosses Saint-Amand-de-Vergt from west to east and connects the municipality with the neighboring communities Fouleix and Saint-Maime-de-Péreyrol the west and Saint-Michel-de-Villadeix in the east. Saint-Maime-de-Péreyrol can also be reached in the north via Routes départementales 8, 21 and 42E1.
