Parish Church of Saint Barthélemy

Parish Church of Saint Barthélemy

The former parish church of the community was located in the hamlet of la Parélie, about 1.5 km northwest of today's center of Église-Neuve-de-Vergt. It was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. Today's parish church is a new building from 1867. Three arched windows accentuate the nave . Two rounded windows in the flat apse let light fall into the choir . As is typical of 19th century construction, a vestibule with the bell tower above grants entrance to the building.

The interior of the church contains two paintings from the 17th century, which have been classified as movable objects as a monument historique since March 5, 1958 . The first work is a representation of Mary with baby Jesus . The frameless oil painting could be a copy of an Italian original. The second work is the altarpiece and shows the scene of the Descent from the Cross with St. Mary Magdalene , the Apostle John , Joseph of Arimathea and St. Nicodemus . The latter two hold the lifeless body of Jesus Christ . The oil painting is a copy of a painting by Hugo van der Goes that has disappeared . In 2010 this work was restored by the restorer Nathalie Legillon-Gavin.
