Vergt ( Occitan : Vern ) is a French municipality with 1672 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the center of the department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Périgueux and is the main town ( Bureau centralisateur ) of the canton of Périgord Central (until 2015: Canton of Vergt ).

Vergt is 16 kilometers south of Périgueux and 30 kilometers northeast of Bergerac . Vergt is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chalagnac in the north and northwest, Église-Neuve-de-Vergt in the northeast, Breuilh in the east and northeast, Salon in the east and southeast, Saint-Michel-de-Villadeix and Saint-Amand-de-Vergt in the South, Saint-Maime-de-Péreyrol in the southwest, Grun-Bordas in the west and Creyssensac-et-Pissot in the northwest.
