Beleymas ( Occitan Belesmas ) is a commune with 274 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the north of the department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It consists of the main town and several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farms (fermes) .
Location and climate
The place Beleymas is a good 32 km (driving distance) southwest of Périgueux or just under 20 km north of Bergerac at an altitude of approx. 135 m ; The Crempse river flows through the municipality . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 835 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.
economy
The community is still largely agricultural, with viticulture only playing a minor role. On the other hand, some fish farms have emerged. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village.
history
The foundation walls of a Gallo-Roman country estate ( villa rustica ) were discovered in the municipality . The first mention of the place name Belemas comes from the year 1268. Nothing is known about possible attacks and destruction during the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) or the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
Attractions
- The Église Saint-Martin is first mentioned in 1655 - after the Wars of Religion. It is a single-nave building with transept chapels added later. The elegantly curved bell gable (clocher mur) is a 17th century addition. The parts of the two altarpieces in the transept come from a monastery in Périgueux.
- Surroundings
- The Château de Gammareix , located approx. 3 km southwest of the village, dates from the 17th century; it is now part of a larger estate and is privately owned.
Personalities
- Pierre de Belleyme (1747–1819), geographer to Louis XV. was born in the Château de Gammareix .
