Saint-Martin-de-Ribérac is a French municipality with 716 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Périgueux and the canton of Ribérac .
The name in the Occitan language is Sent Martin de Ribairac and is derived from Saint Martin of Tours . The addition "de Ribérac" was added in the 19th century.
The inhabitants are called Saint Martinois and Saint Martinoises .

Saint-Martin-de-Ribérac is located about 30 km west-northwest of Périgueux and about 2.5 km southeast of Ribérac in its Unité urbaine in the Ribéracois area of the historic province of Périgord on the western edge of the department.

history
The area of the municipality was settled since Gallo-Roman times . The name of the parish was first mentioned in the 13th century. Since the Middle Ages , the settlement extended around a noble seat, which had jurisdiction over the parish. After it had been a seigneurie of the Aydie family in the Ancien Régime , Saint-Martin-de- Ribérac was attached to Ribérac at the beginning of the French Revolution , although its own administration was retained. In 1851 the community finally became independent.
Population development
Immediately after gaining independence, the municipality reached its peak in population in 1851 with around 1,550 inhabitants. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 595 inhabitants with short recovery phases until the 1980s, before a phase of moderate growth set in, which is still ongoing today.

Saint-Martin-de-Ribérac can be reached via Routes départementales 13, 43 and 709, the former Route nationale 709 , which connects the municipality with Ribérac in the northwest and with Bergerac in the southeast.
The commune is connected to other communes in the department by a line from the Transpérigord bus network from Périgueux to Ribérac.
Personalities
- Jean Jacoupy, born on April 28, 1761 in Saint-Martin-de-Ribérac, died on May 27, 1848 in Bordeaux , was a Catholic priest. In 1802 he was appointed Bishop of Agen by Napoleon Bonaparte .
- Guillaume Boulle de Larigaudie, known under the name of Guy de Larigaudie, born on January 18, 1908 in Paris , died in the Second World War on May 11, 1940 in Musson , Belgium , was a French scout , writer, explorer, emcee and journalist. He spent much of his youth in the Les Gérauds mansion, which belonged to his family.
