Chartreuse (country house)
Chartreuses are country estates, especially in southwestern France , that are detached and mostly secluded. The building of a chartreuse is often elongated and built low. Etymologically, the term comes from the Chartreuse , a mountain range where the monks of the Carthusian order built their first monastery .
An example of a Chartreuse is the manor house of Sautet in the municipality of Molières in the Dordogne department .
