Ian Rickson (born November 8, 1963 in Dulwich , London) is a British theater director.

Life

Rickson grew up in south London. He graduated from Essex University with a degree in literature . He came to the theater through literature and working with young, as yet little-known authors. From 1993 he worked as an assistant at the Royal Court Theater , from 1996 to 2006 he was artistic director there. During this time he achieved a number of productions that were both popular with audiences and highly praised by critics, and which were then played in other theaters. They made him known beyond the national borders.

Segull at the Royal Court, 2007

His breakthrough at the Royal Court came in 1997 with the world premiere of "The Weir" by Irishman Conor McPherson , a play that went down as one of the greatest audiences in the history of the house. The production continued on Broadway in 1998 . In July 2009 he brought out Jez Butterworth's Jerusalem , which would also be a huge hit for the theater, the writer, lead actor Mark Rylance and Rickson as a director. “Jerusalem” was Butterworth's fourth play after “Mojo” (1995), “The Night Heron” (2002) and “The Winterling” (2006) to be premiered under his direction at the Royal Court.

In 2006 he finished his work at the Royal Court with a production of Chekhov's play The Seagull in the new translation by Christopher Hampton . Kristin Scott Thomas was back on a theater stage for the first time in the role of Arkadina after several years in which she had only made films. Mackenzie Crook played Constantine, Katherine Parkinson played Masha and Chiwetel Ejiofor played Trigorin. Kristin Scott Thomas received the Laurence Olivier Award for her performance . The production went to the Walter Kerry Theater on Broadway in 2008.

After the Royal Court he only worked as a freelance director, e.g. B. for the National Theater , the Almeida and stages in the West End and on Broadway.
