Libourne is a French city with 24,845 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The city is the seat of the sub-prefecture ( sous-préfecture ) of the Arrondissement Libourne and is also the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the canton Le Libournais-Fronsadais .
geography
Libourne lies on the Dordogne River and its tributary Isle . The surrounding region is called Libournais and is known for its viticulture . Libournais includes the famous appellations of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol .
history
Libourne was founded in 1270 as a bastide on the site of the Roman settlement Fozera . It got its name after the city founder, the Englishman Roger of Leybourne . Aquitaine was then under English rule.

Gilbert Mitterrand ( PS ), the second son of the former French President François Mitterrand , has been mayor since 1989 . After his resignation in November 2011, Philippe Buisson (PS) became the new mayor.
