Jules Joseph Théodore Steeg (born December 19, 1868 in Libourne , Gironde department , † December 19, 1950 in Paris ) was a French politician .

Life

Steeg, a son of the evangelical pastor and later politician Jules Steeg (1836–1898), studied law and philosophy and from 1892 worked as a teacher. In 1904 he was at a by-election as a deputy for the 14th arrondissement in the Chamber of Deputies elected and re-elected in 1906 and 1910. In addition to his mandate, he worked as a lawyer in Paris. In the period from 1911 to 1930, Steeg was a member of the government on several occasions and headed the education, interior and justice ministries on several occasions. From 1914 to 1921 he was a member of the Senate . From 1921 to 1925 he was Governor General of Algeria . He then held the post of General President in French Morocco from October 4, 1925 to January 1, 1929 . Steeg was the French head of government from December 13, 1930 to January 22, 1931 as President du Conseil . His predecessor was André Tardieu , his successor Pierre Laval . In 1936 he was re-elected to the Senate, and in 1938 he held brief ministerial posts again.
