René Pierre Charles Marie Princeteau (born July 18, 1843 in Libourne , † July 1914 in Fronsac ) was a French animal painter and sculptor and one of the first teachers of Toulouse-Lautrec .

Princeteau came from a respected middle-class family. Like his sister Thérèse, he was deaf. He began his training as a painter and sculptor under Dominique Maggesi in Bordeaux and moved to Paris in 1865 to the École impériale des Beaux-Arts. His teacher was now Augustin Dumont . He set up his own studio at 233 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré . From 1868 he exhibited regularly and very successfully in the salon . He was friends with his professional colleagues John Lewis Brown and Jean Louis Fourain .

After his participation in the 1870s war, military motifs were added to his previous repertoire, which was initially shaped by his classical training and then concentrated on depictions of animals. For example, the painting Patrouille de Uhlans surprise dans une embuscade de francs-tireurs , which he presented in the Salon in 1872.

From 1880 Princeteau withdrew more and more to his country estate in Fronsac. He continued to exhibit his works in the salon until 1904 and continued to paint for the rest of his life.

Several of Princeteau's works are owned by the Boston Harbor Museum.

Princeteau and Toulouse-Lautrec

Princeteau was also friends with Alphonse de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri's father. So it came to the first art lessons for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Horses were one of the main motifs of the passionate rider. Among other things, a painting by Princeteau has come down to us that shows Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec on horseback between his father and the artist himself. Another work by Princeteau is Toulouse-Lautrec on foot at the age of 19.

In 1881 Toulouse-Lautrec painted his teacher for his part. The oil painting shows Princeteau in his studio in front of the easel.
