John Lewis Brown

John Lewis Brown (born August 16, 1829 in Bordeaux , France , † November 14, 1890 or 1892 in Paris ) was a French battle painter , animal painter and genre painter .

Life

Brown comes from a Scottish family who went into exile in France with the Stuarts royal family .

Brown studied at the Paris École des beaux-arts with Camille Roqueplan, among others . He was also known as a watercolorist and a steel engraver. His battle depictions show z. B. Scenes from the American War of Independence , the Wars of Napoleon the First and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871.

Works

Brown's works can be found in the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, on loan from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec d'Albi , the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin .
