Wolf's Rain ( Japanese ウ ル フ ズ ・ レ イ ン , Urufuzu Rein ) is a 26-part anime television series that first aired on January 6, 2003. The story is penned by Keiko Nobumoto , who later published a manga for Wolf's Rain. The music for Wolf's Rain was composed by Yōko Kanno . A four-part original video animation followed .

action

Wolf's Rain takes place in a fictional world, comparable to a post-apocalyptic and dystopian future, in which a large part is ecologically destroyed and many people live in poverty. A legend is told that the wolves knew the way to paradise and led everyone there before the end of the world. However, this legend is not taken seriously by many, as wolves have been considered extinct for 200 years. In reality, however, they have also evolved and have quite human characteristics and have perfected their stealth skills so that they are indistinguishable from normal people. At the same time, they have retained the typical abilities of a wolf and accordingly have great agility, keen sensory perception and their natural weapons. The human representation is not comparable to a werewolf transformation, but a mental trick that only gives them a different perceived appearance.

The wolf Kiba is convinced of the existence of paradise and in his search for it arrives in a city where the wolves Tsume, Hige and Toboe lead a life as thieves in their misery. Typically for wolves, there is a turf war between Tsume and Kiba, at the end of which the weakened Kiba is shot and imprisoned by the hunter Quent. Quent is one of the few people who are convinced of the existence of wolves, but ignorantly even adopted the half-wolf Blue as a hunting dog. With the help of Hige, Kiba is able to escape from prison and he manages to convince Hige of his plan, the search for paradise. Ultimately, all four wolves come together and go on a journey together. On their journey the troop grows closer and closer together and they manage to find the flower maiden Cheza, who is said to be the key to paradise. At the same time they are pursued by Quent, the noble Darcia and Jaguara, as well as by Hubb and his former wife and scientist Cher. After a while, Blue also joins the pack. As the world around them deteriorates and draws to a close, everyone ends up losing their lives. Paradise opens, but evil remains through Darcia's wolf eye. All characters are reborn to, as Cheza promised, find true paradise this time.

Characters

main characters

The story mainly revolves around the wolves Kiba, Tsume, Hige, Toboe and Blue as well as the "flower maiden" Cheza, who is supposed to lead the wolves to paradise.

Kiba ( キ バ (牙) , German "fang")
  • The leader of the pack . Kiba follows his instincts. He can sense the presence of the flower girl and goes in search of her, who seems to have a special connection to him. He is suspicious of people and initially refuses to take human form even in cities. After meeting Cheza, he tries everything to protect her and to get to paradise with her help, which is only accessible to wolves. He's a big, snow-white wolf.
Tsume ( ツ メ (爪) , German "claw")
  • Tsume is a gray wolf who initially leads a human street gang. He only relies on himself. Initially, he does not believe in paradise and only follows the others because of the instinct to protect them and remain part of a pack. He is characterized by the cross-shaped scar that he wears on his chest as a wolf and as a person. This scar is based on his troubled past. Tsume is secretly jealous of Toboe because he had a home and people who loved him.
Hige ( ヒ ゲ (髯) , German "whisker")
  • Hige seems to know best how to survive among humans. He wears a collar that has a dark secret behind it. When he's not thinking about his stomach, he uses his senses more than the rest. Hige also likes to check out pretty women. Kiba is closest to him (which may also be because he met him first from everyone else) and he promises that he will come with him. He later falls in love with Blue. If she is not there, he is not very responsive, just like her "old man", because he fears that she likes him more than him.
Toboe ( ト オ ボ エ (遠 吠 え) , dt. "Howl")
  • Toboe is a little younger than the rest of the group. He grew up in the city under the care of an old lady, who also got his bracelets, which he accidentally killed. Likewise the falcon of the girl Leala, with whom he wanted to make friends. His life as a 'lap dog' has given him a lot of empathy, which Tsume, whom he admires, is initially viewed as a weakness and makes him the most fearful in the pack.
Blue ( ブ ル ー )
  • Blue was the Yaidens' pet. After the destruction of Curious and most of her family, she goes on a hunt for wolves with Quent. She can track them down and recognize them, since she is a half-wolf herself, which she only recognizes when she meets Cheza. Now Blue, like other wolves, can take on a human form and speak to people. Despite the knowledge that she is half a wolf, she does not want to give up seeing Quent again. Blue especially likes Hige, which she doesn't want to admit at first. Although she first thinks that she shouldn't look for paradise, she then joins the pack. Blue and Hige won't be a couple after all, they die because Darcia bit Blue on the neck. She is also the only female wolf in the pack.
Cheza ( チ ェ ザ )
  • She is the flower girl, a girl who was artificially created from a lunar (moon) flower through lost scientific and alchemical knowledge. She has a special bond with wolves and is said to be the key to opening up paradise and leading the wolves there. She also feels a special connection to Kiba. She is attracted to wolves in the same way that wolves are attracted to her. Cheza is hunted by her "creators" who they want to have back in the laboratory.

Supporting characters

Cher Degre ( シ ェ ー ル · ド ゥ グ レ )
  • She is a scientist who wants to research the flower girl. She seems fascinated by Cheza and wants to understand her and her purpose.
Hubb Lebowski ( ハ ブ · リ ボ ウ ス キ ー )
  • A police investigator and Cher Degre's ex-husband. He still loves her very much and tries to protect her. He often asks jokingly whether she and he still have a chance.
Quent Yaiden ( ク エ ン ト · ヤ イ デ ン )
  • He's the ex-sheriff of the city of Curious. He has dedicated his life to hunting wolves, which he blames for the destruction of his city and the death of his family. His only concern seems to be to get revenge on the wolves and find a hard drink. Even though he knows that Blue, his pet, is a half-wolf himself, he doesn't kill her because she reminds him of his family and she is the only one he has left.
Darcia ( ダ ル シ ア )
  • Third generation of the Darcias, a once proud but now decrepit noble family. He kidnaps Cheza and tries with her to revive his lover Harmona, who has been seized by the Paradise Sickness and appears almost dead. He can also turn into a wolf since he has the eye of a wolf.

Origin and publications

The animation studio Bones produced a 26-part television series that was broadcast between January 6 and July 29, 2003 on the Japanese television station Fuji TV .

During the broadcast on Japanese television, a sponsor jumped out, so episodes 15, 16, 17 and 18 are compilations of the previous episodes, in the form of flashbacks the action is summarized from the eyes of a character. After a new sponsor was found, the production of the other episodes was resumed. After the completion of the 26 episodes, however, the plot only had a temporary ending, which was not originally planned. So four additional episodes were published as OVA in January and February 2004, which completed the story. The series was published in Germany by OVA Films on eight DVDs and now comprises a total of 30 episodes.

In 2007 the series was broadcast centrally on the TV station MTV . All episodes, including the four OVAs, were broadcast on Animax on January 2, 2009.

Since February 7, 2014, the free TV broadcaster ProSieben Maxx has been broadcasting the series weekly on Friday night.

The television series also aired in the United States, France, Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Brazil, among others.
