The Mojo Club is a music club on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. The club was founded in 1989 and was considered a pioneer in the field of modern breakbeat-oriented sounds such as acid jazz in the 1990s and was of great importance for the dance floor jazz .

history

The Mojo Club was founded in 1989 after the legendary "Beatbox" in Wuppertal, which began in 1988 to bring the most important figures of the international acid jazz scene to Germany via Gills Peterson. In 1991 he moved to the eastern end of the Reeperbahn in an empty, former bowling center. A characteristically wreathed "M" became the logo of the Mojo Club. In the Mojo Club, Gilles Peterson , Massive Attack , Moloko , the Propellerheads , Pizzicato Five , Roni Size , Goldie , the EZ Rollers and Kruder & Dorfmeister performed .

The “Electric Mojo” and “Dancefloor Jazz” club series established themselves there. There was also a complementary cultural program with the “Urban Poetry” and “Power Club” readings held since 1993, as well as Raphaël Marionneau's “Le Café Abstrait”. The latter paved the way for the chill-out sound in 1996 .

From 1992 to 1997 the Mojo Club in Hamburg ran two fashion stores called “Mojo-The Shop”.

The Mojo Club closed in April 2003 and the building was demolished in November 2009.

Between 2010 and 2012, three new buildings, the Dancing Towers, were built on the site at Reeperbahn 1, and the new Mojo Club was integrated into their common basement. The entrance is set into the forecourt Reeperbahn 1 and can be entered through two floor hatches, there is also a Mojo café on the ground floor. The opening, originally planned for September 1, 2012, was postponed several times and finally took place on February 2, 2013.
