Moloko was a British - Irish duo of electronic dance music founded in Sheffield in 1993 , consisting of the Irish singer Róisín Murphy and the British producer Mark Brydon . The band name is an allusion to Nadsat from the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess , in which the protagonists drink "Moloko" ( Russian for milk, молоко) in a bar .
Band history
founding
Before she met Mark Brydon, Róisín Murphy had no experience as a singer and, according to her own statement, had not planned this as a career. Brydon has at this time been known as a member of the British Industrial - radio band Chakk and the 1980 House-Acts Cloud 9 and Krush made and remixed such diverse bands like Eric B. & Rakim and Psychic TV . Both met at a party in Sheffield, where Murphy Brydon addressed with the question "Do you like my tight sweater?" ("Do you like my tight sweater?"), Which would later become the title of the Moloko debut album. After that party, the two became a couple both musically and privately.
Said debut album was released in 1995. The single Fun for Me , on the Batman & Robin - Soundtrack can be found, for the first time made it into the charts. With their mix of funk and dance, Moloko hit the nerve of the time.
The international breakthrough
In 1998 the second album I Am Not a Doctor was released. With a remix of the single Sing It Back , mixed by Boris Dlugosch and Michi Lange , which was released in summer 1999, Moloko landed their most successful release to date. On their wave of success, Moloko released their third studio album Things to Make and Do in April 2000 , from which the internationally successful single The Time Is Now comes from. Murphy later described that Sing It Back's club house mix, despite its success, was the beginning of the end of the band because Brydon produced the song as a ballad and was unhappy with the new version, while Murphy liked it.
Moloko took a long break for the first time before they began work on the next studio album. In the meantime, All Back to the Mine was released in 2001, a double album with old and new Moloko remixes by well-known DJs (including Mousse T. , Matthew Herbert and Ashley Beedle ).
Before the recording of the fourth studio album Statues , which was released in 2003, Murphy and Brydon ended their love affair and went their separate ways privately. However, as Moloko they continued to work together and toured Europe and Australia almost continuously for 18 months after the release of Statues . Live and in the studio, since Things to Make and Do, the pure Brydon / Murphy project Moloko had developed into a real band that played together with a permanent cast. Keyboardist Eddie Stevens in particular played a key role in shaping the band's sound. Statues was more successful in the German album charts than its three predecessors and reached number twelve.
From the last British concert on the Statues Tour on November 22, 2003 at the Brixton Academy in London , the live DVD 11,000 Clicks was released in mid-2004 . Directed by Dick Carruthers, who had previously worked for Led Zeppelin , The Who , Oasis and Portishead .
The future
Murphy released her first solo album, Ruby Blue , in 2005 , which was followed by more. Brydon dedicated himself to smaller projects. In December 2011 there was renewed contact between the two, whereby the deep house title Simulation published on the Internet was recorded.
