Ruby Blue is the debut album of Irish musician Roisin from the year of 2005.

Emergence

After Róisín Murphy and Mark Brydon broke up their joint electronica duo Moloko , Murphy began working on Ruby Blue. For the album she was able to win Matthew Herbert, who is known for his musique-concrète approaches , as producer .

After some of the tracks had been recorded and submitted to the record company, they found the tracks unsuccessful and asked Murphy to make the songs more accessible to the radio. She refused and replied that she “wanted the record to be as pure as possible”. The record company later tolerated this.

The recorded material was first released on three EPs with the titles Sequins 1 , Sequins 2 , and Sequins 3 in January, February and May 2005 on 12 "vinyl records , before being put together on one record.

Record cover

The cover is by Simon Henwood, who dressed and drew the singer in sequins after checking her wardrobe . He described the figurative character of Murphy as a "disco-electro-pop diva in the 1940s look". Henwood later also directed the singles' music videos.

Compositions

Combined on the record is a mix of electronica and jazz from the early 1920s , a penchant for Herbert. The instruments, primarily brass and woodwind instruments, are placed above the sounds of an alarm clock , water dispenser and hairsprays, among other things . The lyrics are about Murphy's relationships with ex-boyfriend and Moloko colleague Mark Brydon and later with Simon Henwood.

Chart placements

Murphy's first work was less successful than her work with Moloko. The album peaked at # 80 on Billboard European Top 100 Albums and dropped out the following week. It reached number 88 in the UK charts. It was most successful in Belgium, where it climbed to number seven and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks. In the rest of Europe, the record reached the top 40 in Finland and the top 50 in Austria , Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In the US, the album did not make it onto the Billboard 200 . Single releases from the record are If We're In Love and Sow Into You .
