Toninho Horta
Toninho Horta (born December 2, 1948 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais as Antônio Maurício Horta de Melo ) is a Brazilian jazz guitarist and composer who has also emerged in the field of Música Popular Brasileira . He developed his own style of harmonization and is considered to be “a subtle guitarist, expressive singer and resourceful composer” who has struck an “elegant arc” between bossa nova and jazz .
Live and act
Horta, born in the district of bairro Floresta , grew up in Belo Horizonte , where he met Nivaldo Ornelas , Milton Nascimento , Wagner Tiso and other musicians from Clube da Esquina . In 1970 he accompanied Elis Regina and Tom Jobim in their show Tom & Elis in Rio. In the next few years he appeared as a companion to Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa , Nana Caymmi , Joyce , Edu Lobo , Maria Bethânia and Dori Caymmi , in order to record his debut album in 1973. In 1976 he worked with Hermeto Pascoal ( Viajando Com O Som (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) ); In 1985 he presented himself at the Free Jazz Festival in São Paulo with Toots Thielemans and Bobby McFerrin . Horta moved to the USA in 1992 and toured Europe with Marisa Monte and Caetano Veloso over the next few years . In 1994 he performed with Philip Catherine at the Martinique Guitar Festival . In 1995 he toured Japan with Herbie Hancock , Pat Metheny and Keith Jarrett . Horta also regularly plays with Ronnie Cuber ; In 2014 he performed together with Cuber with the WDR Big Band Cologne .
Horta known compositions are Diana (with Fernando Brant), O Céu de Brasilia (with Brant), Durango Kid (with Brant), Dona Olímpia (with Ronaldo Bastos) Beijo Partido , Manuel, O Audaz (with Fernando Brant), and Pedra da Lua (also called Moonstone ) and Manuel o Audaz (or Eternal Youth ). Pat Metheny is heavily influenced by Horta, who was one of his teachers.
