Nivaldo Ornelas

Nivaldo Lima Ornelas (born April 22, 1941 in Belo Horizonte ) is a Brazilian jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , flute , composition , arrangement ) who has also emerged in the field of Música Popular Brasileira .

Live and act

Ornelas started playing the accordion as a child . At the age of 16 he played the clarinet and became a member of the Orquestra Sinfônica Mineira. He also played for dance and founded the Berimbaubar in his hometown, where he performed with Milton Nascimento , Toninho Horta , Wagner Tiso and other musicians from the Clube da Esquina . In 1967 he founded the Quarteto Contemporâneo with the pianist Jairo Moura, the bassist Tibério César and the drummer Paulo Braga. In 1970 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he became a member of the Som Imaginário ensemble , which initially accompanied Milton Nascimento, later Gal Costa , Macalé, Carlinhos Vergueiro and Sueli Costa, but also recorded records as an independent ensemble. He also worked with Paulo Moura and Hermeto Pacoal ( Viajando Com O Som (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) ).

In 1978 he toured the United States with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira , where he also performed at the Newport Jazz Festival (and then at the Festival Internacional de Jazz de São Paulo ). Soon after, he recorded his first album under his own name, Portal dos anjos , which was awarded the Troféu Villa-Lobos in 1979 . In the group of Hermeto Pascoal he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and in Japan. He performed at the Rio Jazz Festival with his band BR1 . He also accompanied Egberto Gismonti ( Corações Futurista, Academia de Danças ) and wrote the score for the feature film João Rosa by Helvécio Ratton , which was followed by other award-winning film scores. In 1983 he performed at the Festival de Jazz de Brasília . In 1999 he toured with Toninho Horta, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette .

Ornelas was involved in 44 recordings in the field of jazz between 1974 and 2003, among others with Celso Foseca / Ronaldo Bastos ( Paradiso ) and Dom Um Romão ( Rhythm Traveler ).
