Fernando Sabino

Fernando Tavares Sabino (born October 12, 1923 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais , † October 11, 2004 in Rio de Janeiro ) was an important Brazilian writer and journalist.

Life

During his youth, Sabino was a radio announcer and began to contribute regularly with articles and stories to the magazines of his hometown Belo Horizonte . He won several prizes in competitions.

In the early 1940s, he began law study. At the same time, he began his journalism career as an editor for the Folha de Minas newspaper . His first volume of short stories, Os Grilos haben Cantam Mais ( The Crickets Don't Sing Any More ), was published in Rio de Janeiro in 1941.

He later worked for the Correio da Manhã newspaper , where he met Vinícius de Moraes and became friends with him.

In 1944 Sabino moved to Rio de Janeiro . After completing his law studies at the Federal University of Rio, he moved to New York for two years with Vinícius de Moraes in 1946 .

One of his most famous works, O Encontro Marcado , was published in 1956. It was also published abroad and adapted as a play. In 1957 Sabino decided to only work as a writer and journalist. He began writing daily reports for Jornal do Brasil newspaper and monthly reports for Senhor magazine . In 1960, O Homem Nu ( The Naked Man ) came out, a collection of Sabino's short stories; The publisher Editora do author was Sabino, Rubem Braga and Walter Acosta was founded. A Mulher do Vizinho ( The Neighbour's Wife ) followed in 1962 and was awarded the Cinaglia Prize of the Pen Club do Brasil .

In 1966 Sabino reported on the soccer world championship for Jornal do Brasil . In 1967 he founded the Editora Sabiá publishing house together with Rubem Braga . This only existed for five years, but there were u. a. Published by Vinícius de Moraes , Paulo Mendes Campos , Otto Lara Resende , Carlos Drummond de Andrade , Manuel Bandeira , Cecília Meireles and Clarice Lispector .

In 1979 the novel O Grande Mentecapto was published, which began a series of 30 other works. For this work he received the Prêmio Jabuti and years later it was adapted for cinema and theater. In July 1999 he was awarded the Prêmio Machado de Assis of the Academia Brasileira de Letras for his life's work .

In 2004 Sabino died in his home in Ipanema ( Rio de Janeiro ) after a long illness , one day before his 81st birthday. His works are among the most widely read in Brazilian schools today.
