Viajando Com O Som (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) -

Viajando Com o Som (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) is an album by the musician Hermeto Pascoal , recorded in 1976. The material he recorded with his Grupo Vice Versa was considered lost for many years and was only released on the British reissue label Far Out Recordings in 2017 .

background

The recordings for the album Viajando Com o Som ( German translated about sound journey ) were made within two days in 1976 in Rogério Duoprat's Vice Versa Studios in São Paulo. In Hermeto Pascoals band played Paul tables (from São Paulo native) rhythm section of Zé Eduardo Nazário (drums), Zeca Assumpção (bass) and Lelo Nazário (electric piano), further saxophonists Mauro Senise , Raul Mascarenhas and Nivaldo Ornerlas , the Guitarist Toninho Horta and vocalist Aleuda Chaves . Pascoal had previously played with this formation at the Teatro Bandeirantes ; the performance lasted several hours without interruption. After the performance, Hermeto saw the possibility of reaching a higher level for his compositions if the music developed organically from structured compositions to freer improvisations.

After recording and mixing, band member Lelo Nazario received a copy of the master tape from sound engineer Renato Viola, which was later lost. Nazario kept this copy in his private archive, where it remained for over forty years before it was rediscovered and restored. The recordings then appeared as the 200th release of the Far Out Recordings label.

reception

Jose Luis Seijas pointed out in Latino Life that the 200th release of Far Out Recordings would be celebrated with the release of a masterpiece by a cultural icon. Hermeto Pascoal's recording from 1976 is a true gem and a rarity, it is jazz beyond any commercial restrictions and full of creative freedom, experimental and very Brazilian; they have rediscovered a great piece of Brazilian music history .

Doc Sillon said in muziq.fr that Hermeto Pascoals Viajando Com O Som was like an excellent wine ( un grand cru ). For Dick Hovenga, the “lost album” shows the “legendary status” that Hermeto Pascoal has acquired over decades; the four compositions combine improvisation, free jazz with Brazilian music. Viajando Com o Som represents the most experimental period in Hermeto Pascoal's career; one could experience the impressive qualities of this band under Pascoal's direction on this album.
