Nicolaus Schwebel
Nicolaus Schwebel (also Nikolaus ; born August 19, 1713 in Nuremberg ; † December 7, 1773 in Ansbach ) was a German classical philologist , poet and educator .
Life
Schwebel was the son of a wealthy Nuremberg miller. He attended the Latin school of St. Lorenz and then the Nuremberg grammar school . He was also a choirboy at the Nuremberg Frauenkirche . In 1732 he went to study at the University of Altdorf and from there in 1735 to the universities in Leipzig , Wittenberg , Halle and Jena . After his return in 1737 he was awarded a master's degree from Altdorf University . In 1738 he was employed as court master by the von Falcken banking family in Vienna . In 1740 he came back to the University of Altdorf, obtained the Venia legendi and became an alumni inspector. Later it is regularly carried out with doctoral degrees ; when he acquired it is unknown.
Schwebel was hired as the rector of the Nuremberg grammar school in 1743 . In 1750 he also received the professorship for the Greek language. He is said to have developed the institution further. He declined calls from, among others, Göttingen and Regensburg . In 1764 he accepted the position of rector and professor at the illustrious Carolinum grammar school in Ansbach . Among other things, he was known for his classic editions. These are still in the historical library of the Ansbacher Gymnasium today.
Schwebel had been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1762 . On September 29, 1772 he was elected a member (matriculation no. 770) of the Leopoldina with the surname Isokrates .
