Zé Eduardo Nazário

José "Zé" Eduardo Pinto Nazário (born September 25, 1952 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz and fusion musician ( drums , percussion, composition). He is considered one of the most influential drummers in Brazil ("professor dos professores").

Nazário received classical piano lessons as a child; then, under the influence of his cousin Luiz Manini, who introduced him to bossa nova and jazz, he switched to drums and received his first instruction on the instrument. At the age of twelve he played in the group Xango 3 . Soon he developed the rhythmic structure of the Jequibau , which was used for the album Jequibau: The Exciting New Rhythm from Brazil by Mario Albanese and Ciro Nogueira.

In 1966 he met the drummer Edson Machado and began playing in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro, where he soon appeared in the group of Francisco Tenório Júnior and met Guilherme Franco , with whom he founded the Grupo Experimental de Percussão de São Paulo . With Gato Barbieri he was involved in the recording of the music for the feature film Minha Namorada (1971) by Zelito Viana . In 1972 he recorded with Roberto Sion and Nelson Ayres in the group Mandala .

In 1973 Hermeto Pascoal brought him into his band, in which he stayed until 1976 and recorded the album Viajando Com O Som (The Lost '76 Vice-Versa Studio Session) . He also founded the Malika group in 1974 with his brother Lelo Nazário and the saxophonist Hector Costita. In 1977, together with Rodolfo Stroeter on bass and Lelo Nazário on piano, he founded Grupo Um , which focused on free jazz . Egberto Gismonti brought him in 1978 (together with Mauro Senize and Zeca Assumpção ) to record his album Nó Caipira . With John McLaughlin he went on tour through South America, he was also involved in the album Clube da Esquina 2 (1978) alongside Lô Borges and Milton Nascimento .

In 1989 he organized the Duo Nazário . In 1991 Rodolfo Stroeter took him to replace Nenê in the group Pau Brasil , with whom he recorded two albums. He also recorded with Toninho Horta , Ivo Perelman , Badi Assad , Taiguara, Rodrigo Lima, Ithamara Koorax, Fernando Pacheco , The Blech , Teco Cardoso , Mônica Salmaso and Marlui Miranda . In recent years he has also worked with the American jazz guitarist John Stein .
