Badi Assad (real name: Mariangela Assad Simão) (born December 23, 1966 in São João da Boa Vista , Brazil ) is a Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer.

life and work

She grew up in Rio de Janeiro until she was twelve . Her father, Jorge Assad, attached great importance to the musical education of the children. Her two older brothers Sérgio (* 1952) and Odair are also well-known guitar players, the Duo Assad (also called Assad Brothers ).

Badi Assad studied classical guitar at the University of Rio de Janeiro, where she won the competition for young musicians at the age of 15 in 1984. In 1986 she became a member of the Guitar Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro , which was led by the guitarist Turíbio Santos. In 1987 she was voted "Best Brazilian Guitarist at the International Villa Lobos Festival". She played in Europe, Israel and Brazil with the guitarist Françoise-Emmanuelle Denis under the name Duo Romantique . In 1995 she was voted "Best Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitarist" by the editors of Guitar Player Magazine .

After the release of the album Chameleon in 1998, she fell ill with a movement disorder, which made it impossible for her to play the guitar at times. In December 2002 she recorded the album Three Guitars with jazz guitarists Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie .

In her career she played with many well-known musicians such as Cyro Baptista , Pat Metheny , Milton Nascimento and Stephen Kent.
