Cyro Baptista

Cyro Baptista (born December 23, 1950 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz percussionist.

Baptista came to the United States in 1980 and settled in New York. He performed with Paquito D'Rivera and worked with John Zorn since the mid-1980s and 1990s . Other partners during this time were Laurie Anderson and Herbie Mann . As a sideman he worked with the Brazilian singer Marisa Monte and with Caetano Veloso and Tom Zé . During the 1990s, Baptista performed several times with jazz singers Cassandra Wilson and Holly Cole . He appeared on five Grammy- winning albums: Yo-Yo Mas Obrigado Brazil , Cassandra Wilsons Blue Light Til Dawn , The Chieftains ' Santiago , Ivan Lins ' A Love Affair and Herbie Hancocks Gershwin’s World .

In 1997 he released his first album as a band leader, Vira Loucos , on which he played his own arrangements of compositions by Heitor Villa-Lobos . In 2002 he founded the percussion ensemble Beat the Donkey , with which he released several albums.
